EPA clinical guidance notes that exercise increases heart rate, respiratory rate and minute ventilation, increasing particle-pollution dose. Avoiding busy roads can also reduce traffic-related exposure.
Scientific boundary
This tool changes behavior advice, not your diagnosis.
It combines a population-level AQI category, activity intensity and duration. It does not estimate your personal inhaled dose, predict an asthma attack, or replace medical advice. If you develop significant breathing difficulty, chest pain or other concerning symptoms, seek appropriate medical care rather than relying on an air-quality tool.
Why intensity matters
Harder exercise means more air moved through the lungs.
Higher minute ventilation increases the volume of ambient air inhaled. Exercise also shifts breathing toward the mouth, reducing some of the nose's coarse-particle filtering role.
Why duration matters
Exposure is not just a concentration number.
Two people in the same ambient air can have very different exposure patterns if one is outside briefly and the other spends a long, vigorous session outdoors.
Why place matters
The campus monitor is an area reference, not a personal sensor.
Traffic corridors, construction, indoor filtration and local microenvironments can make the air you actually breathe different from the nearby monitoring station.
