Why the same air can mean more exposure during exercise.
The outdoor concentration may be unchanged, but your ventilation is not. Exercise increases respiratory rate and tidal volume, so the total volume of ambient air inhaled per minute rises.

This is conceptual—not a dose calculator. Real inhaled dose depends on actual breathing rate, duration, pollutant concentration, particle size and route of breathing.
More air per minute
Higher minute ventilation increases the volume of polluted air inhaled during the same clock time.
More mouth breathing
As exercise intensity rises, breathing often shifts toward oronasal breathing, reducing some of the nose's coarse-particle filtering role.
Deeper peripheral delivery
Higher tidal volume and airflow can change particle deposition and deliver fine/ultrafine particles more peripherally.
The important nuance
Exercise is healthy. The goal is exposure management, not permanent inactivity.
Regular physical activity has major health benefits. When particle pollution is unhealthy, public-health guidance generally focuses on reducing outdoor intensity or duration, choosing cleaner times/locations, or moving the session indoors—not abandoning exercise altogether.
Traffic matters too
A city-wide monitor cannot see every roadside plume.
Particle concentrations can be higher close to busy roads because of vehicle exhaust, road dust and local combustion. If you can move a run or walk away from heavy traffic, you can reduce one important local exposure source even when the city-wide reading is unchanged.
